How fake crypto platforms work
- You are introduced to a platform through a romance, social media, or investment group
- A small initial investment appears to generate impressive returns on their dashboard
- You are encouraged to invest more — often your savings
- When you try to withdraw, you are told to pay a "tax" or "fee" first
- After paying, further fees are demanded or the platform disappears
Warning signs
- Platform is not registered with the Central Bank of Ireland
- Returns are suspiciously high and consistent
- Withdrawal is always blocked by new fees
- Platform was introduced by a romantic interest online
- Celebrity endorsement (almost always fabricated)
