Safe online dating practices

  • Keep your full name, address, and workplace private until you have met in person
  • Use a dating-specific email address that does not include your name
  • Do a reverse image search on profile photos before investing emotionally
  • Video call before any real-world meeting — scammers avoid video
  • Never send money to someone you have not met in person
  • Tell a trusted person about anyone you are talking to online

How to do a reverse image search

  • Right-click their profile photo and select "Search image with Google"
  • Or go to images.google.com and upload the photo
  • If the same photo appears under many different names, it is stolen

What to do if you suspect a romance scammer

  • Stop all communication immediately
  • Do not feel ashamed — these are professional manipulators
  • Report the profile to the dating platform
  • Paste the conversation into our Romance Scam Detector
