Password safety guide

Weak or reused passwords are the most common way scammers gain account access. This guide shows you how to fix that in minutes.

Why password safety matters

If you use the same password for multiple accounts, a single breach can give scammers access to your email, banking, and social media simultaneously.

Creating strong passwords

  • Use at least 12 characters
  • Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols
  • Never use personal information (name, birthday, pet's name)
  • Use a passphrase: "Correct-Horse-Battery-Staple" is stronger than "P@ssw0rd1"

Using a password manager

A password manager generates and stores unique passwords for every account. You only need to remember one master password. Recommended options: Bitwarden (free), 1Password, Dashlane.

Two-factor authentication (2FA)

Enable 2FA on every account that supports it — especially email and banking. Even if someone knows your password, they cannot access your account without the second factor.
