What is caller ID spoofing?
Scammers use software to display any phone number they choose on your screen. A call displaying a legitimate UK bank number may actually come from a criminal group operating abroad.
Official Garda guidance
- Do not answer +44 calls you are not expecting
- Let voicemail take it — genuine callers leave messages
- Never say "Yes" to automated questions — your voice can be recorded
- Never give bank details, OTPs, or personal information
- Do not call back using the number left in a voicemail
The voice recording risk
Some calls begin with "Can you hear me?" to record you saying "Yes." This may be replayed to authorise fraudulent transactions. Hang up immediately if this happens.
