What is AnyDesk used for in scams?

AnyDesk and TeamViewer are legitimate remote access tools. Scammers misuse them to take control of your device, access your banking apps, and transfer money out of your accounts — while you watch helplessly.

How the scam unfolds

  • Caller claims to be from your bank, Microsoft, or utility company
  • They say there is "suspicious activity" or a "virus" they need to fix
  • They ask you to install AnyDesk or TeamViewer
  • Once installed, they take full control of your device
  • They transfer money from your bank account

What no legitimate organisation will ever ask

  • Your bank: never needs remote access to your device
  • Microsoft: does not proactively call about viruses
  • HMRC or Revenue: does not request remote access
  • Police: does not ask you to install software
